The Pope has arrived in Jerusalem. The flags of the Vatican are all around Jerusalem. But for us his visit is another traffic nightmare. The road where I live will be emptied of all vehicles tuesday night. No parking is allowed on my street on wednesday, and a whole neighborhood will be completely shut down on that date between 6-9 am and 4-8 pm.

Under the bridge, a sign indicates an archaeological dig. The Western wall is part of what remains of the surrounding walls of the Temple, destroyed in 69 by Titus. In 1868, a Christian girls' orphanage and school, Talitha Kumi, was built in what is now part of the center of town, by the renowned architect Conrad Schick. All that now remains of the original building is a three-part memorial outside Hamashbir on King George Avenue - the original facade including a clock and engraving, a chimney, and part of a window - erected by Jerusalem architect David Kroyanker after the building was destroyed in 1980 to make way for property development.

The main street of Jerusalem is under construction from last august, and there are no signs the situation will improve in the near future. I really can't understand the purpose of the big, ugly wall being erected on the other side of the street in front of the existing buildings.

Planned by the Italian architect Antonio Berluzzi. Constructed between 1924-1927.

Prince Umberto, later King of Italy, came to Jerusalem in 1928 to dedicate the statue poised on the roof - the haloed Madonina, patron saint of Milano.

When the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus became inaccessible in 1948, the university rented part of the Terra Sancta building from the Franciscan custodians of the Latin Holy Places and set up a number of its departments in it. It was not until 1997 that the last university department, Climatology, left Terra Sancta.

To tell the truth, I would never have thought this was a Bauhaus-style building. But here it goes:

The many architects who were influenced by the Bauhaus style projected the fundamental concept of Walter Gropius, the director of the Bauhaus school, that Bauhaus was not a dictation in style, but rather an inspiration for the designer. However, although expressing Bauhaus ideas, the movements' architects in Palestine always integrated stylistic details derived from the surroundings in which they worked. A good example is Yohanan Ratner's Jewish Agency building of 1927. Ratner employed Middle Eastern elements, such as central courtyards, arched entrances, and glacis-type walls suggested by the outer walls of the "tower of David"citadel.

The house of the dead bridegroom

In 1882, two rich Arab catholic families arranged a mariage between their children. The parents built a two-stories house for the new couple. But a duy before the wedding, the bridegroom fell sick and died. Teh parents decided to have the wedding nevertheless and conducted the ceremony with the dead bridegroom and his bride, sitting side by side. After the weding they took the bridegroom to the cemetary and buried him. The house was abandonned till the Turkish authorities in the 1890s decided to transform it to a hospital, and added a new wing and a wall. With the British Mandate the house became the location of the regional health office.

There was a little railway station. Then the trains stopped to come. And after a long time, a new station was constructed, far away from the older one. And weeds and neglect and even squatters were left.

Today the tracks nearby are the location for cultural events such as the book festival in May, various fairs and even the projection of films during the summer evenings. The gates and windows of the station are shut down, replaced by pictorial renditions of the life that once was.

At the foot of the Cinematheque, and between the Cinematheque and the walls of the Old City lies the valley of Hinnom. This name Valley of Hinnom - Gue ben Hinnom is a term that appears a lot in the prophets of the Bible, and has been generally translated by Hell. One of the reasons may be that as said in Jeremiah 7:31:

And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of... Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.

These dilapidated houses are part of the Schneller orphanage compound.

The Schneller Syrian Orphanage was founded in 1860 by Father Johannes Ludwig Schneller, who came to Jerusalem from Germany as a Protestant missionary. At first, the institution took in children orphaned by the Druze massacre of Christians in Lebanon and Syria. In time, the compound grew and was walled in, and after the Second World War it became a closed army camp.

The Syriac Orphanage in Jerusalem, also well-known as "Schneller-School", was founded by the protestant missionary Johann Ludwig Schneller. It is located in a huge building surrounded by a vast wall, which is situated on a hill in the north-west part of the historic center of Jerusalem, a distance of about 3 km to the Jaffa-Gate. It was declared open in 1860, at first as a shelter for Lebanese orphans who were victims of the prosecution of the Christian population that took place at this time, then for all Christian orphans and later on for children who survived the genocide of the Armenian people. Besides this duty in the Syriac Orphanage native teachers were also trained, who wished to join the missionary schools in Palestine. The institution was not only equipped with bedrooms and other facilities as classrooms, but also training workshops, e.g. a bakery, printer's and bookbinder's shop, a carpenter's workshop with a turnery, a tailor's and a potter's shop, a brickyard, a locksmith's and a shoemaker's workshop, as well as a church, a shop, a canteen, a home and workshop for the blind, a girl's building with a workshop, a playground, a vineyard, an apiary, stables, and a garden where vegetables and flowers were grown. In addition the institution also owned numerous houses and farms in the vicinity, and a agricultural training workshop near Ramleh. The Syriac Orphanage was closed down in 1940 by the British occupying power. In 1948 it was captured by Israeli forces. The archway bears up to these days the inscription "Syriac Orphanage" in both German and Arabic.

The bridge was built by Moses Montefiore, a Jewish British philanthropist at the middle of the ninetheenth century. His goal was to attract the Jewish population outside the Old City's walls by giving them the means to work. The quarter, Yemin Moshe (Moses' Windmill) is one of the first quarters to have been built outside the walls of the Old City.
Other habitations he built nearby, Mishkenot Shaananim, are now used to host artists of international reputation during their sabbatical in Israel.
At the time the Jewish population represented at least half of the population of Jerusalem.
